A successful 1st CRONUS Annual Meeting in Barcelona!

st Annual Meeting took place on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th February 2024, at the UAB Campus, Barcelona, Spain.

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona successfully hosted the event at its campus in Barcelona, at the premises of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) premises. The meeting agenda is available at: https://cronushorizon.eu/1st-cronus-annual-meeting-in-barcelona/

The meeting kicked-off with a welcome from Gonzalo Gamboa, host of the project meeting and an overview of the CRONUS project by Dimitris Malamis, Project Coordinator. Then it was the turn of the Work Package leaders and task leaders to present their work and plans: Ruud Timmers from CARTIF (WP2 Leader) on the Perspectives on opportunities and challenges for biogenic gases for a carbon-negative biofuels production and the Task 2.2 regarding the catalogue of biogenic gases solutions and good practices examples. Elli Barampouti, from NTUA, presented progress noted on Task 2.1 on project inventory database for biogenic gases production from the biofuel sector in Europe. Maria Zachariou-Dodou from MADISI on Task 2.3 and barriers identification on biogenic gases. Gonzalo Gamboa informed the participants about the progress of WP3: Communities of Practice and stakeholder engagement in the European biofuels sector. Sofia Mai from NTUA updated the participants on technological processes for the valorization of biogenic gases from biofuels production (WP4) and each Task leader from WP4 presented the task results.  Najla Kamergi & Eric Mino from SEMIDE elaborated on mapping exploitation scenarios, business modelling, green financing and marketing activities progress for CRONUS technologies. Lida Ampatzi from NEVIS, on Communication, Engagement and Dissemination Activities undertaken during the 1st year of the project implementation.

The 2nd day of the annual meeting in Barcelona started with WP group parallel sessions: WP2, WP4&5, WP6 and a transversal meeting between WP3, 7 and 8. The meeting continued with: 1) Workshop moderated by the SEMIDE team (N. Karnegi & E. Mino) on Building the CRONUS technologies business model. 2) Workshop on Sustainability and Circularity Dimensions of CRONUS processes & systems, led by BRUNEL Team (E. Katsou, E. Koumaki, A. Theodoropoulou, A.Mousavi). 3) Workshop on existing barriers (feedstock, availability of organic waste, competition over biogenic CO2, scaling up etc) of the CRONUS project led by UAB team (G. Gamboa).

Next, a round table discussion on dependencies, planning activities, issues raised & productive interaction with Advisory Board members took place. Dimitris Malamis, project coordinator from NTUA led the session. Sofia Mai & Dimitris Malamis from NTUA, elaborated on WP4 dependencies on other CRONUS Work Packages. Gonzalo Gamboa from UAB on WP3 dependencies, Panagiotis Kougias from ELGO on WP5 dependencies and Naja Karnegi from SEMIDE on WP7 dependencies, to all CRONUS WPs. In the end, Dimitris Malamis from NTUA presented the progress of project management and project review.

The 1st Annual Meeting closed with the CRONUS team visiting the premises of the Composting Research Group (GICOM) of UAB. The teams exchanged thoughts and knowledge on edge technologies and set the ground for future synergies.
