Functional Prototype 3 (FP3): Syngas Biomethanation

The most promising reactor configuration in respect to filling material, operation mode (co- or counter-current operation, Gas and liquid flows, etc) for syngas biomethanation developed within WP4 will be applied in a 70L volume pilot biomethanation reactor. The methanation unit will be used to ferment the gas from biomass pyrolysis unit (or commercial syngas) until stable and continuous operation has been achieved. The Functional prototype 3 will be installed at Copenhagen, Denmark.

  • TECHNOLOGIES Syngas biomethanation

The pilot reactor will be inoculated with inoculum from a biogas reactor and will be operated until enriched syngas biomethanation microbial culture has been established. Depending on stability and efficiency, bioaugmentation with appropriate syngas biomethanation microbial consortia, might be applied to improve reactor biomethanation performance. The reactor will face an adaptation period towards good biofilm formation and then, the gas retention time will be gradually decreased. Digestate effluent coming out from a biogas reactor will be used as nutrient media. The composition of gas and liquid streams will be alternating to evaluate tolerance to instabilities. The reactor will be regularly set at stand-by mode and be re-started to evaluate the ability of the microbiome to return quickly to high biomethanation efficiencies.
