Functional Prototype 5 (FP5): Anaerobic digestion system coupled with a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC)

Based on the findings of the subtask 4.6, an existing two-phase AD pilot plant will be retrofitted in terms of coupling a MEC system to develop a novel reactor model with the configuration more adequate for maximizing biomethane production. It will consume the CO2 produced during the anaerobic digestion process by in situ reaction with the H2 generated by a MEC unit located inside the system, in order to obtain enriched biogas.

The existing plant is a mobile two-phase AD pilot plant constructed in the frame of the project LIFE VALUVOIL and retrofitted during the project LIFE REVAWASTE to work with waste with a high solid content (e.g. agricultural or food waste). The unit is installed in a container and includes a sonication equipment as pretreatment (optional use), an homogenization tank (0.5 m3), a continuous stirred tank acidification reactor (700mm high and 450mm inner diameter, 0.1 m3), a stirred tank methanogenic reactor (1,200mm height and 800mm inner diameter, 0.5 m3) and a biogas collecting system. The system is equipped with internal regulators, temperature and pressure sensors, temperature and pH control, variable speed mixing system and gas flow meter. The tailor-made MEC will be introduced in one of the digesters.
